Lutheran Elementary School of Bay Ridge (LES), located at 440 Ovington Avenue, has been a place of education, enlightenment, respect, caring and concern since its founding by Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1957.
We offer a high quality education to a multi-religious school population in a nurturing, yet challenging environment. Classes are for children from nursery through 8th grade. Our tradition of academic excellence is virtually unmatched. Each year standardized tests are given in more than five-hundred public, private and religious schools in New York City. In 2001 we were the only school in Brooklyn -- and one of only two schools in all of New York City -- in which 100% of our students passed the 4th grade math and reading standardized tests. We would welcome the opportunity to have your child be a part of that tradition.
The moment you step through the doors of LES you can tell that this is a vibrant community, full of life, learning and the pursuit of wonder. From a student's earliest years we engage in challenging academic inquiry and the search for guiding Christian values. At a time when instilling strong moral and ethical values is increasingly important, our commitment to Christian education makes LES unique among schools. Equally important are developing strong personal character, self-esteem, leadership, self-discipline, respect for others, social responsibility and community service, tolerance, and an appreciation for all that God provides. LES grew out of the commitment of Bethlehem Lutheran Church to provide a solid education in a moral environment. That commitment is unchanged to this day.
Nursery & Pre-K: LES provides an environment that creates the security children need to explore and experiment. Our goal is to instill a life-long love of learning and a quest for knowledge.
Kindergarten: Our reading program uses both whole language and phonics. The goal of our math program is to develop a solid foundation through hands-on experience and discussion.
Grades 1, 2 & 3: Students learn to excel in solving problems, engaging ideas and creating solutions. We offer a rare combination of caring teachers, small classes, personal attention, and a developmental approach to integrated subject matter.
Grades 4 & 5: Our students become active thinkers, makers and explorers of ideas. They accomplish this through academic skill development, imaginative abstract thinking, and organization and discipline.
Grades 6, 7 & 8: The needs of adolescents are unique. No longer children, but not yet teenagers, the junior high school students require a special combination of structure and challenge. LES's small classes allow teachers to give each child the support and encouragement he or she needs to thrive. Our curriculum is departmentalized to prepare students for high school. LES's Honors Program helps maximize every child's potential.
Curriculum: English, mathematics, social studies (history, geography, civics), science, Spanish, computers, health, physical education, religion, and music (vocal and instrumental) are incorporated into the academic requirements of K through 8th grade.
Eligibility: Nursery: Child must be 3 by the end of the calendar year of enrollment and toilet trained. Pre-K: Child must be 4 by the end of the calendar year. Kindergarten: Child must be 5 by the end of the calendar year. Grades 1 to 8: In-house testing at time of interview.
