May Message

Pastor Paul's Message for April

Dear Members & Friends,

In our monthly bible studies we have been studying the various letters of the New Testament.  We have covered Philippians, Colossians and James over the last few months.  It enhances our understanding of these books when we discover who each letter was written to and the purpose of the letter.  God's word comes alive when we take the time to study the background behind the written word.

The letters to the Philippians and Colossians become truly inspirational when we realize they were written by the apostle Paul from prison.  How could Paul write such a joyous letter to the Philippians when he was "in chains"?  Various forms of the word "joy" are prevalent throughout this letter.  Paul is rejoicing.  Paul is singing.  Paul is praying.  Paul is inspiring and strengthening his fellow believers.  Paul does all of this at a time when his sentence was undetermined.  He did not know whether he would live or die, but he served his risen Lord with joy, no matter what the circumstances in his life.  In his letter to the Colossians, Paul makes sure the people realize the power of prayer.  He accentuates the proper place of Jesus in the life of the Christian.  He has words of advice for Christian households.  He concludes, "I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand.  Remember my chains.  Grace be with you."  Philippians & Colossians --  Incredibly uplifting books!

The letter of James makes perfect sense when we realize that it was written for the early Christian believer who already had a strong faith.  It was not meant to convert the non-believer, but rather to provide practical advice on the behavior expected of a Christian.  The letter is not meant to be theological and take on those questions concerning our salvation (i.e. Justification by faith, Law vs. Gospel, Salvation through grace).   James comes right out and tells the Christian what he/she needs to do.  God needs us to work.  God expects us to work.  If we are not doing God's work then we are not being faithful.  "I by my works will show you my faith."  It is as simple as that.  The book of James is a motivational sermon giving the Christian moral and ethical instructions for living.  James --  Every Christian should read it!

Studying God's word should be a part of the life of all Christians.  It draws us closer to him and helps us understand how we should be living our lives.  Take the time to read and study God's holy word.  The bible accomplishes nothing when it is closed on your bookshelf.  It is an inspiration when it is opened and read.

         In His Service,
